Tonight Karleigh and I were invited by our roommate to go to the hot springs with her and a bunch of her friends. We weren't quite sure, but we decided to go. When we got to the parking lot, it turned out we had to hike a couple of miles to get to the hot springs. In our group of eleven people we only had two or maybe three flashlights. It was pitch dark. As I was walking in the dark I had no clue where I was going, or how far I had to walk. There were some steep drop offs from the trail that were difficult to see in the dark. When I was walking in the dark I felt very disoriented, and I did not make much progress, I moved very slowly. When I had some of the light shining close to where I was walking, I was able to make progress. Instead of feeling disoriented, I knew where I was going and I was confident.
As I walked, I thought about how this relates to the gospel and to the spirit. Without the gospel we too would be walking in darkness unsure of where we were going, unable to see the "cliffs" or the traps of the adversary. With the light however, which represents the gospel and the spirit, we are able to see where we are going. We know the eternal perspective. We know where we came from. We know why we are here and where we are going. With the light of the spirit we are able to avoid the temptations of Satan and other dangers around us that we otherwise may have been unaware of. We are able to make progress in our lives, progress towards the type of individuals the Lord would have us be through the gift of the spirit.
On our trek up to the hot springs there were times when I had light and I could see and there were times when I could not. The amazing thing about the gospel is that we can have light, the spirit, with us all the time as long as we live worthy of it. I absolutely love this gospel! I am so grateful for the light it is in my life!
I am living, and loving that I get the chance to learn from the simple everyday experiences in my life.
